The BR 290, direct successor to the V 90, is one of the most recognisable shunting locomotives in the German diesel fleet. Trix reproduces it in HO scale with running number 290 022-3 in DB Cargo livery for Era V, built on a die-cast metal chassis and body that give it a weight and presence on the track that is hard to overlook. The central bell-type motor delivers smooth, controlled traction particularly useful for slow shunting movements.
Construction and technical features
The model runs on four powered axles with traction tyres, features maintenance-free LED headlights and tail lights, and comes with metal handrails and additional steps that are fitted separately for greater visual accuracy. The cab interior is rendered in relief detail. It leaves the factory configured for analogue operation, but includes a 21-pin connector that allows a DCC decoder to be fitted without any further modification. Overall length is 164 mm.
On the layout
In a marshalling yard or at the throat of an Era V freight station, a BR 290 brings coherence to the scene without requiring long consists. Its compact size handles tight-radius curves well, and the metal finish gives it a visual solidity that reads equally well in motion or on the display shelf. It works naturally as a secondary service locomotive within a larger motive power fleet, or as the centrepiece of a well-built shunting scene.
Optional digitalisation
The integrated 21-pin connector makes conversion to digital straightforward at any point. Those already running DCC can fit a compatible decoder without touching the model's structure, leaving all exterior details intact. A practical choice for anyone who wants to run the locomotive in analogue now and make the switch to digital later.
