The SNCB/NMBS Reeks 53 is one of the most recognisable diesel locomotives in the Belgian Era IV fleet, and Roco reproduced it in HO scale under reference 63963. This 2005 reissue corrected the yellow shade from the 2004 version, making it the more accurate of the two. At 218 mm long with drive on all 6 axles, it has a solid, commanding presence on the track from the very first run.
Motor, traction and digital equipment
The five-pole motor with flywheel delivers smooth, progressive running particularly noticeable during acceleration and braking. The 8-pin NEM 652 interface allows fitting an external decoder, and the model comes with digital and sound as standard. The NEM 362 coupler with close-coupling kinematics integrates cleanly into consists without unsightly gaps between units.
Lighting and cab detail
The triple lighting automatically switches between white and red depending on the direction of travel, with twin headlights at each end. The visible cab interior, brown lateral window frames, the B logo on the front and the four small roof ventilators alongside the large rheostatic brake cooling fan give the model a very distinctive visual identity for anyone familiar with Belgian rolling stock of this era.
On the layout and in a consist
At 218 mm, the 5307 sits naturally at the head of a train without looking out of proportion. In an Era IV consist with Belgian stock, it fits equally well leading passenger coaches or working mixed services. The corrected yellow finish of this reissue ensures visual coherence with SNCB/NMBS material of the same period, and the integrated sound adds real presence as it passes through a station or runs along a long straight on the layout.
