The Athearn Genesis ATH75832 is an HO scale SD70 reproducing road number 7205 in the Illinois Central Gulf Legendary Liveries scheme. ICG's orange and white is one of the most recognisable liveries in North American railroading, and this collectible hypothetical version applies it to a modern-era SD70, imagining how that corporate identity might have looked on one of the most representative diesels of the 19912010 period.
Genesis G2: mechanism and sound in a single package
The model belongs to Athearn's Genesis G2 range, which means a substantial die-cast chassis, five-pole skewed-armature motor, precision-balanced flywheels and multi-link drive. Current pickup and traction are distributed across all wheels, fitted with RP25 profile wheelsets. The SoundTraxx Tsunami2 decoder handles sound in both DCC and analogue DC modes: diesel engine, SL5T horn and bell all operate in either mode. Dual cube speakers are integrated into the chassis. Lighting is provided by frame-mounted LEDs.
Exterior and interior detail
Handrails are Celcon, radiator grilles are etched metal, and the cab features a detailed painted interior with seats, screens and window shades. Exterior details include rooftop antennas, air conditioning and beacons, dual sand lines, train line hoses and MU receptacles, wire grab irons, windshield wipers and an anti-glare panel. The rear pilot carries MU hoses and spare knuckles. Couplers are McHenry spring-loaded, low profile.
On the layout: visual weight and presence at the head of the train
An SD70 of these dimensions with a die-cast chassis commands real presence on the track. On a modern-era North American layout, it can lead long freight consists without losing visual coherence. The ICG orange scheme stands out clearly on any track plan, and the integrated sound adds a layer of atmosphere that is especially noticeable in station scenes or on straight sections with continuous traffic. The recommended minimum radius of 22 inches is worth keeping in mind when planning the section of layout where it will run.
