The Athearn ATH-1443 reproduces the EMD SD38 under road number GMTX #3300, a unit managed by GATX Leasing with a prior history on Norfolk Southern. The Primed for Grime finish is no casual aesthetic choice: the base colours come deliberately muted from the factory, with NS logos covered by paint patches that replicate exactly how these locomotives looked when they returned to service under a new operator. It works as a starting point for those who want to display it as-is, and equally for those who prefer to add their own rust and weathering effects.
Drivetrain and Econami SoundTraxx sound system
At the heart of the locomotive is a 5-pole motor with precision-machined flywheels, gear drive and traction on all 6 axles, with electrical pickup on every wheel for smooth, uninterrupted running. The die-cast chassis provides the weight needed to keep the locomotive pulling reliably even in long consists. The Econami SoundTraxx decoder comes factory-installed with a 21-pin NEM connector: in analogue mode it automatically activates the EMD 645 engine sound, bell and horn when track voltage is applied; in DCC it offers full control with start-up sequences, dynamic braking, multiple horn types and independent ditch light control via F5/F6.
Exterior detail and track compatibility
The ATH-1443 comes factory-equipped with fine-scale handrails, separate air tanks, windshield wipers, a Leslie RS3L horn on the long hood and open ventilation grilles. LED lighting covers front, rear and directional ditch lights. Wheels are profiled to RP25 standard, making the locomotive compatible with the main HO scale track brands. Minimum operating radius is 18 inches (45.7 cm), though Athearn recommends 22 inches (55.8 cm) for the best appearance in curves.
On the layout and in a consist
An SD38 in Primed for Grime finish fits naturally into industrial yard scenes, freight terminals or lease-unit traffic. The die-cast chassis weight approximately 0.65 kg gives it real pulling power within a consist, and all-axle traction helps maintain smooth running on grades and tight curves. In a display case, the paint patches over the NS logos are a detail that sets this unit apart from any brand-new fleet locomotive: it tells a story without needing anything added.
