Some locomotives stand out for their mechanical power; others stop you in your tracks before the train even starts moving. The SD70ACU #7030 of Canadian Pacific falls firmly into that second category: the Lord Strathcona's Horse commemorative livery, with its tactical camouflage green finish, makes this unit a singular piece in any HO scale locomotive roster. Athearn releases it under the Genesis line, with everything that implies in terms of detail and factory-installed electronics.
Athearn Genesis ATHG-1161: SD70ACU Canadian Pacific with Tsunami2 Sound
The factory-installed SoundTraxx Tsunami2 decoder handles diesel engine sounds, horn and bell, with NMRA-compatible functions and slow-speed control for precise switching. In DCC, full function access is available; in DC, basic sounds remain active. The 5-pole skewed-armature motor, 8-wheel drive, all-wheel current pickup and precision-balanced flywheels combine to deliver smooth, stutter-free running especially useful on long stretches or graded track.
Exterior detail and LED lighting
The ventilation grilles are transparent and photo-etched, the MU brake line hoses are flexible rubber, the windshield wipers are individually applied, and the cab features full interior detail. LED lighting covers the trucks, number boards and directional running lights, with a clean visual response both in motion and at a standstill. McHenry couplers are operative straight out of the box.
On the layout: presence and coherence on the track
An SD70ACU of this size needs room to move naturally: the confirmed minimum radius is 18 inches, though Athearn recommends 22 inches for comfortable running without stressing the mechanism. At the head of a North American freight consist, the military livery adds a visual contrast that makes the whole train more interesting without losing railway coherence. It also works beautifully in a display case, where the cab detail and photo-etched grilles can be appreciated up close.
