Some locomotives command the track in a way very few models manage. The Roco 71814 is one of them. At 391 mm overall length, the SBB Ae 8/14 no. 11851 unfolds across the layout as an articulated two-section block, joined by a rigid current-conducting coupling that unifies power pickup along the entire chassis. The result is a double locomotive that runs with an electrical and mechanical continuity rarely found in models of this scale.
A complete technical rebuild with factory ZIMO decoder
This release is Roco's Neukonstruktion version: a full technical overhaul introducing improved cardan transmissions, a 5-pole central motor with flywheel and an integrated energy buffer (Pufferkondensator) built into the chassis. The buffer absorbs micro-interruptions when crossing turnouts with isolated frogs or sections of dirty track, preventing lighting flicker and sound drop-outs. The ZIMO decoder with PluX22 interface (NEM 658) independently controls the LED lighting 3 white front marker lights and 1 rear tail light along with the headlights, shunting signals and cab illumination on both ends. The sound package reproduces the hum of AC transformers, power notch contactors, pneumatic compressors, shunting whistle, brake squeal and heavy rolling over rail joints.
Zamak chassis, 8 powered axles and minimum radius from 358 mm
Both main frames and internal blocks are die-cast in heavy metal (Zamak), giving the model a high mass that promotes adhesion without the need for magnets. Of the 8 powered axles, 2 are fitted with factory traction tyres. The outer ends carry NEM 362 pockets with KK kinematics, and the minimum curve radius is 358 mm (R1). The locomotive is factory-configured for standard 2-rail DC with DCC.
No. 11851 in its post-1961 configuration, Era IV
The model reproduces the Ae 8/14 no. 11851 as it appeared after its reconstruction at the Bellinzona workshops following the 1961 fire: driving cabs with the same profile as the Ae 4/7, fir green finish with dark grey chassis, black bogies and silver roofs. The side lettering includes the operating number 11851, axle load tables and technical inspection data. The roof carries two single-arm articulated pantographs in fine metal, red high-voltage hoses and three-dimensional circuit breakers. The separately applied details windscreen wipers, metal handrails, brake hoses and coupling rods complete a reproduction set firmly in Era IV (the 1970s and 1980s). On the layout, the 391 mm of this articulated double locomotive lead a freight consist with a presence no added wagon can match: the train starts to make sense in scale the moment the Ae 8/14 enters the track.
