The Ge 4/4 II is one of the most recognisable electric series on the Rhätische Bahn, and Kato reproduces it in N scale with road number 631, named after the Graubünden municipality of Untervaz. This version features the rectangular headlights characteristic of the series' modern appearance, placed in Era VI. At 80 to 84 mm over buffers, the locomotive fits neatly at the head of passenger consists without upsetting the visual scale of the train.
Flywheel motor and track behaviour
The five-pole flywheel motor (Schwungmasse) delivers smooth acceleration and braking, resulting in more natural running through the layout. The locomotive handles a minimum radius of R150 and can tackle gradients of up to 5%, with a declared capacity to haul up to 12 passenger coaches on a 4% grade. In an N scale RhB coach consist, that means full-length trains are well within reach without compromising performance on curves or inclines.
Lighting and DCC readiness
Headlights switch from white to white depending on the direction of travel, with three active lights at each end. The model comes configured for two-rail analogue DC but is DCC-ready via a Digitrax-compatible drop-in decoder board (not included). A jumper and two spare Arnold couplers are included, along with the short coupler fitted as standard.
Layout and display case integration
On an alpine or metre-gauge layout, the Ge 4/4 II 631 brings instant coherence to the front of any RhB passenger consist. Its compact N scale footprint allows it to run on tight-radius trackwork without losing the feel of a complete train. It also works well in a display case as a reference piece within a collection focused on the RhB or Swiss Era VI rolling stock.
