The Plan V, widely known as the Mat '64 or Apekop after the distinctive shape of its cab, is one of the most recognisable electric multiple units in Dutch railway history. Roco reproduces it in HO scale as reference 7710001 in its DC version with full digital sound: a 599 mm double unit ready to run straight out of the box with a factory-fitted PluX22 sound decoder.
A double unit with all the electronics sorted
The 7710001 is the full-sound DC variant within the Roco range for this model, setting it apart from the 7700001 supplied without a capacitor and the 7720001 in alternating current. It features a 5-pole motor with flywheel, two powered axles and one axle with traction tyres. The buffer capacitor (Pufferkondensator) absorbs micro-interruptions at turnouts or dirty track sections, preventing both LED flicker and dropouts in the digital sound playback. The pantographs are finely detailed and both coaches feature detailed interiors.
Lighting, couplings and running geometry
LED lighting is fully implemented: three front headlights and two rear lights that switch with the direction of travel, plus switchable digital interior lighting. The outer ends carry NEM 362 pockets with close-coupling kinematics, while the join between the two coaches is handled by a rigid current-conducting coupling that distributes both power and the digital signal throughout the entire consist. The minimum curve radius is 419 mm, dictated by the combined length of the two coupled bodies.
On the layout, a unit that defines the platform
At 599 mm total length, the Roco Plan V needs space and earns it: in an Era III-IV station scene, the double unit fills the platform with a visual scale that gives the whole setting meaning. It requires no locomotive or additional hauled stock; it runs as a self-contained, closed consist, making it straightforward to plan into a layout and easy to integrate into a Dutch or Central European setting from the second half of the twentieth century.
