Description

The Roco 7110038 brings the SNCF steam locomotive 150.Y.16 to HO scale in the black and green livery in which this model makes its first appearance in the Roco catalogue. It belongs to Epoch III, the post-war period when the French rail network reorganised its steam traction fleet ahead of progressive electrification. With coupled tender and a total length of 265 mm, it takes up a notable stretch of track and commands a visual presence that is felt from the very first straight.

Drive and digital equipment

The model features an integrated PluX16 decoder with sound, allowing direct use on DCC layouts without any additional work. Drive is shared between the five powered axles of the locomotive and two axles of the tender, all driven via cardan shaft, with a flywheel for smooth acceleration and braking. The front headlights are LED and switch direction with the direction of travel. The connecting rods and coupling rods are die-cast metal, and the fine-spoked wheels on the powered axles deliver a level of detail that really shows at slow speeds. The locomotive-to-tender connection uses Roco's close-coupling mechanism, and the outer coupler follows NEM 362 standard. Minimum operating radius is 358 mm.

Construction details and finish

The disc wheels on the carrying axles contrast with the fine-spoked wheels on the powered axles a distinction that faithfully reproduces the functional difference between both types on the real machine. The cab is compatible with the Z21 control system. The PluX16 electrical interface makes future decoder upgrades or replacements straightforward, with no structural modifications to the model required.

On the layout and in a consist

At 265 mm in length, this locomotive with tender needs room at the ends of the track plan and runs comfortably from 358 mm radius upwards. In an Epoch III consist, it naturally leads a formation of freight wagons or passenger coaches from the same era, and its black and green livery gives it a distinctive character within the motive power fleet. In a display cabinet, the combination of metal rods, spoked wheels and coupled tender makes for a compelling overall impression well worth its place even off the track.
