The Mat '64 affectionately known as the «Apekop» for its rounded, protruding cab ends was for decades the most recognisable commuter multiple unit in the Netherlands. Roco reproduces it in HO scale under reference 63139 as a double NS unit in Era IV, carrying the real fleet number 418 and the yellow livery with three diagonal blue stripes that identified Stoptrein services. A consist spanning 599 mm of track that, once running, never goes unnoticed on any layout.
Factory-fitted digital technology
Reference 63139 comes fitted as standard with the ZIMO MS450P22 sound decoder on a PluX22 interface. The module handles recorded acoustic effects from the real train traction motor hum, pneumatic compressors, door closing, NS whistle and station announcements and independently controls the LED interior lighting in the passenger compartments. The headlights switch automatically according to the direction of travel: three white lights at the leading end and two red at the trailing end. An integrated stay-alive capacitor ensures smooth running over points and dirty track sections without sound drop-outs or flickering.
Mechanism and running gear
The central 5-pole motor with flywheel transmits drive synchronously to the running axles. Polished metal axles on low-friction bearings allow smooth running even at low speeds. The two coaches are joined by a rigid current-conducting coupling that distributes power and digital signal throughout the entire consist. The outer ends feature NEM 362 pockets with short-travel kinematics. The minimum curve radius is 419 mm worth bearing in mind when planning the track layout given the overall length of the unit.
Finish and presence on the layout
The roof-mounted pantographs are metal with very fine filigree detailing. The model includes individual windscreen wipers, brake air hoses on the cab fronts and metal handrails. The fleet numbering reproduces the real unit 418 with inscriptions legible under a magnifying glass. The interior distinguishes the partitioned first-class compartments from the open second-class seating. On a Dutch Era IV station scene, the double unit fills the platform with a presence that balances the layout well: long enough for the train to look convincing, detailed enough to reward a closer look. This reference is the 2-rail DC version; the 3-rail AC version for Märklin systems is available under reference Roco 69139.
