The NS 6400 series is one of the most recognisable diesel locomotive families on the Dutch railway network of recent decades. Trix reproduces it in HO scale as number 6409, in an Epoch V version that fits naturally with freight consists or shunting services typical of that period. The prototype is the Vossloh Schienenfahrzeugtechnik GmbH (VSFT) type G 800 BB, an evolution of the standard MaK design and that heritage shows in the locomotive's compact, functional silhouette.
Metal construction and digital readiness
The chassis and body are made from die-cast metal, giving the 22762 real weight on the track and a solid presence on the layout. The bell-armature motor with flywheel ensures smooth running even at low speeds, backed by 4 powered axles and 4 traction tyres for reliable grip. Separately applied plastic details add visual definition without compromising the overall robustness. Although supplied for two-rail analogue DC, it includes the 8-pin NEM652 connector for fitting a DCC decoder whenever the modeller is ready.
LED lighting and track readability
Lighting is fully LED, with triple headlights at the front and red tail lights at the opposite end, switching automatically with the direction of travel. On an Epoch V layout, this detail gives the locomotive clear track readability: the active end is immediately obvious, adding naturalness to its movement within the railway scene.
Fit in consist and layout
At 165 mm over buffers, the 6409 takes up a proportionate amount of space on the layout without overpowering the scene. Leading a consist of Epoch V freight wagons, or working a yard alongside a track fan, this locomotive brings coherence to the whole without needing much explanation: the 6400 series silhouette is distinctive enough for any modeller familiar with Dutch railways to recognise it straight away.
