The Roco 77024 brings together three ÖBB Shimmns sliding tarpaulin wagons in a set designed to form Epoch VI steel freight consists. Each unit carries contemporary Rail Cargo Austria lettering with the STEEL inscription in white on rust-brown tarpaulin, plus its own UIC number to avoid visual repetition when coupled in sequence. The result is a uniform consist that, on the layout, runs with the natural look of a real block train.
Shimmns wagons for heavy freight traffic in HO
The Shimmns design is a covered flat wagon with V-shaped interior cradles intended for transporting steel coils. Roco has reproduced the sliding tarpaulins in rigid plastic with vertical folds, tension creases and lower locking levers, adding a visual volume that sets these wagons apart within any freight consist. The tampo printing includes technical markings for maximum load by line category and workshop inspection symbols, readable under a magnifying glass on the side of the underframe.
Confirmed running gear and mechanics
Each wagon rides on four axles over two articulated Y25 bogies with fine-flange NEM-standard isolated metal wheels. The short KK-Kinematik coupler with NEM 362 pocket manages the gap between buffers: reducing it on straight track and widening it on curves to maintain the visual continuity of the consist without risk of derailment. The confirmed minimum radius is 358 mm. The set is designed for two-rail DC systems; adaptation to AC requires Roco 40196 axles, which are not included with this reference.
Three wagons, three numbers: block train coherence on the layout
One of the most useful features of this set is that all three units carry factory-differentiated UIC numbering. Placed on track alongside other Shimmns wagons from the same fleet, the consist gains credibility without the eye detecting any repetition. In a freight yard scene or on a continuous-run layout, the total coupled length of 414 mm gives the train the visual weight that a Epoch VI steel Ganzzug demands.
