The «Raj» is one of those wagons any Central European modeller recognises instantly: four vertical sphero-cylindrical silos, a raised structure on Y25 bogies and that characteristic oxide brown of the ?SD freight fleet. This Roco set brings together three Era IV Uacs units, fully factory-fitted and ready to run as a powdered-materials block train that sits naturally on any layout set in 1970s or 1980s Central Europe.
A consist that reads as a single unit
At 498 mm total coupled length, the set already has the presence of a freight train in motion. The NEM 362 coupler with short elastic kinematics (KK-Kinematik) keeps the wagons running very close together on straight track, reducing the gap between buffers to a minimum, while on curves the mechanism expands just enough to negotiate the bend without strain. From a radius of 358 mm the wagons track smoothly, thanks to the articulated Y25 bogies that absorb changes of direction with ease. The fact that all three wagons carry different UIC numbers is a detail that really pays off when they run together: no visual repetition, and the consist gains real coherence.
Factory equipment and finish
Roco delivers these units fully assembled: freestanding perimeter handrails, grab handles, vertical access ladders, open longitudinal grilles along the top and three-dimensional pneumatic pipes on the underframe all fitted as standard. The wheels are polished metal with fine-flange profile, configured for two-rail DC systems. Those running on Märklin three-rail AC can convert by replacing the original axles with the Roco 40196 axle set, officially specified by the manufacturer for this purpose.
On the layout, a block train with a story
Three Raj wagons running in line bring to the track that sense of a specialised consist that works so well in industrial scenes or yard settings: a cement works in the background, a discharge hopper, a ?SD diesel locomotive hauling the lot. The uniform colour and form across all three units reinforces the block-train reading, and the resulting length almost half a metre coupled gives visual weight to any Era IV freight composition without needing to add more rolling stock.
