Roco released this set in the third quarter of 2023 to mark the centenary of the Austrian Federal Railways. The consist reproduces the commemorative livery ÖBB applied to its flagship Railjet, featuring national tricolour motifs, institutional heraldry and official lettering printed along the sides of the entire rake. The result is a train you recognise at a glance on the layout: you don't need to read the number to know what it is.
A complete eight-piece consist in HO scale
The set includes the electric locomotive Rh 1116 251-0, four tourist class coaches, one first class coach, one restaurant car and one driving trailer. All vehicles feature a detailed interior with seats, partitions and class-specific configurations. NEM 362 couplers with KK-Kinematik allow smooth transitions between coaches, with bellows that maintain the visual continuity of the consist. Total coupled length reaches 2358 mm, making this one of the longest passenger consists available in HO.
Motor, lighting and digital readiness
The locomotive features a central motor with flywheel transmitting traction to four powered axles, one fitted with traction tyres. LED lighting is direction-dependent: three white headlights at the front and two red tail lights at the rear. The default configuration is two-rail analogue DC, but the locomotive includes a PluX22 socket and the driving trailer carries an independent PluX16 interface, allowing both ends of the train to be digitalised separately. For digital operation, the driving trailer requires its own function decoder to manage lighting switching without interference.
On the layout: length, platform and minimum radius
At 2358 mm of coupled train, this Railjet needs a generous platform and a track plan that allows for curves from 358 mm radius upwards. At a station of reasonable size, the consist fills the platform from end to end and delivers a sense of real railway that few pieces achieve in HO. The driving trailer at the rear reinforces the reading of a complete unit: the train has a recognisable front and back, which helps the station scene work visually even when the consist is standing still.
