The SNCF class 150 X is one of those steam locomotives that, in miniature, takes up exactly the space it deserves: a large, imposing machine with a trailing tender that leads a consist with natural authority and visual weight. Märklin reproduces it in HO scale under reference 37886, with integrated mfx decoder, speed-dependent steam sound and an articulated frame a combination that makes it a functional and visually convincing piece for Era III layouts.
A heavy steam locomotive with full onboard electronics
The digital mfx decoder allows control from the Central Station 60212, the Mobile Station 60652 and the Control Unit 6021. The multifunction sound effects generator reproduces the steam rhythm in relation to speed, with distinct acceleration and braking effects. The headlights work in both conventional and digital operation. Acceleration and braking delay are digitally adjustable, making for more realistic running on layouts with gradients or frequent stops. The tender features a Telex coupler and a smoke contact for the 7226 generator, which can be fitted at a later stage.
Articulated frame and close coupling between locomotive and tender
The articulated frame allows this locomotive to handle tight curves without losing visual or functional continuity. The adjustable close coupler between locomotive and tender reduces the gap between both units, keeping the overall look compact and coherent. With 5 powered axles and 4 traction tyres, traction is well distributed along the machine, contributing to smooth running even at the head of long consists.
On the layout, leading an Era III freight consist
At 26 cm in length, the 150 X occupies a generous stretch of track and sets the visual pace of the train from the front. In an Era III scene with SNCF rolling stock, it fits naturally at the head of a freight wagon consist, bringing scale and balance to the whole composition. The option to add the 7226 smoke generator at a later stage allows the level of functional detail to be expanded without modifying the base locomotive.
