The Märklin 87711 is the Stromrichterwagen 406.7 intermediate coach for the Deutsche Bahn AG ICE 3 in Z scale. Conceived as a consist piece, its purpose is to extend or complete the Märklin ICE 3 (ref. 88712), to which it is linked by a special coupler system that ensures minimal spacing between coaches and a visual continuity very close to the real prototype.
An intermediate coach built for the consist
In Z scale, the length of each coach carries considerable visual weight. At 113 mm, this 2nd class, two-door coach adds presence and rhythm to the train without breaking the coherence of the consist. The special coupler exclusive to this ICE 3 model is no minor detail: it allows the coaches to sit almost flush against each other, reproducing the articulated feel that defines the real ICE 3. Adding this intermediate coach is, in practice, lengthening the consist while preserving the same unified visual reading.
LED lighting and Era V finish
The interior lighting via maintenance-free LED diodes is fully functional from the outset, with no further intervention required. The coach reproduces the DB AG livery in Era V, placing it firmly within the contemporary period of German high-speed rail. On a layout, the effect of a row of lit coaches reinforces the impression of a train in active service.
A consist piece, not a standalone item
It is important to note that the Märklin 87711 does not operate independently: its special coupler is designed exclusively for the Märklin ICE 3 (ref. 88712). This makes it a specific expansion piece for that consist, with no possibility of use with other rolling stock. For those who already have the ICE 3 in Z scale and want to gain train length, this intermediate coach is the natural extension provided by the manufacturer.
