The Märklin 87712 is the official intermediate coach for extending the ICE 3 in Z scale. It reproduces the first-class Trafowagen 406.1, one of the intermediate cars of the Deutsche Bahn AG Baureihe 406, and is conceived expressly as an extension piece for set 88712. Without that reference set, this coach has no independent function: its special coupler only fits the Märklin ICE 3 model for Z scale.
One more section on the white high-speed train
In Z scale, high-speed trains gain a great deal with every coach added. The ICE 3 is a long unit with a distinctive silhouette, and each Mittelwagen incorporated reinforces that sense of a continuous, uniform consist. The 87712 measures 113 mm and features integrated low-maintenance LED lighting, keeping the lighting coherent across the full train whether running on the layout or displayed in a cabinet.
Confirmed technical data
Intermediate coach Trafowagen 406.1, first class, four doors. Operator Deutsche Bahn AG, Epoch V. Length 113 mm. Low-maintenance LED lighting. DC analogue system. Special coupler exclusive to the Märklin ICE 3 88712 in Z scale.
How it fits into the consist
Within an ICE 3 formation in Z scale, each intermediate coach added visually lengthens the train and better balances the relationship between the powered ends and the body of the consist. On a layout with a station or long platform, a greater number of intermediate coaches gives the train a visual scale closer to that of the real prototype. The 87712 fulfils exactly that role: adding length and continuity to the composition without disrupting its unity.
