Description

The TGV Sud-Est was the first high-speed train to enter commercial service in Europe, and its first-generation orange livery is one of the most recognisable visual icons of French Era IV railways. Kato reproduces it in N scale under reference K10-2134, in a 2025 special edition that includes ten coaches in a collector's case, identified as train 08 with the ROUEN emblem.

A complete consist ready for the layout or the display cabinet

The set brings together the two power cars and eight intermediate coaches that make up the full trainset. The 5-pole motor with flywheel delivers smooth, progressive running, while the white and red LED lights switch automatically according to the direction of travel. The version is analogue DC, with an NEM-651 connector integrated into each power car for those who wish to digitalise the set with two independent decoders.

Ready for a 20-coach double formation

One of the highlights of this set is the inclusion of a removable coupler cover and drawbar, allowing two trainsets to be joined and a 20-coach formation to be recreated. The built-in dummy circuit allows the lights on the inner power cars to be switched off when running in double formation, maintaining the visual coherence of the consist. The pantograph specific to AC sections rounds off the confirmed technical details of this reference.

On the layout, the orange of the TGV Sud-Est carries its own visual weight

On an Era IV layout, a ten-coach consist in orange commands a considerable presence on the track plan. The length of the train, the uniformity of the livery and the aerodynamic profile of the power cars make this set work just as well in motion as it does displayed in its collector's case. For those looking to expand the scene, the option of coupling a second trainset opens the door to recreating the longer formations that defined the TGV in its early years of service.
