Part of the Bachmann Silver Series, this baggage car reproduces coach #21 of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad, a company that operated in Nevada from 1869 serving the mining communities of the Comstock Lode. The model captures the wooden car design typical of the 18601880 period, when the railroad was beginning to replace the stagecoach across the American West, and brings it to HO scale with a level of detail consistent with the Silver Series range.
Body construction and finish
The high-impact injected polystyrene body features a textured relief simulating the original vertical wood planking. The clerestory roof with rounded ends a common nineteenth-century solution for improving natural ventilation is crisply defined in the moulding and gives the car its characteristic silhouette. The end platform railings are factory-applied as separate pieces, adding three-dimensional depth without any need for further work. Flush transparent windows complete the overall look.
Wheels and couplers
The blackened metal wheels conform to the NMRA RP25 profile, ensuring compatibility with commercial Code 100 and Code 83 track. The trucks are moulded in low-friction Celcon plastic for smooth rolling, and the non-magnetic brass axles have conical tips that reduce rolling resistance. The factory-optimised internal weight improves the car's centre of gravity. Body-mounted E-Z Mate® Mark II couplers allow magnetic coupling at standard height.
Fitting into a consist
In a period consist set in the American West, the baggage car typically runs immediately behind the steam locomotive. Placed there within the train, V&T coach #21 helps establish the visual rhythm before the passenger coaches, and its clerestory roofline keeps the overall look consistent with other Old-Time rolling stock from the same era. At 17.78 cm long, it fits well both on straight track sections and in station scenes with a short platform.
