The Bachmann Combine, reference 13505, belongs to the Silver Series and represents one of the most characteristic cars of American railroading in the 1860-1880 era. Painted unlettered green, it can be customised with whichever road name or number best suits the consist each modeller wants to build. Its 16.51 cm length keeps it visually consistent with other passenger rolling stock of the period.
Two functions in a single car
The Combine divides its interior into two distinct sections: a windowless end for baggage, express parcels or light freight, and a windowed end with seating for passengers. This arrangement was common on 19th-century branch lines, where traffic did not justify dedicating separate cars to each function. In a period passenger consist, the Combine naturally sits between the baggage car and the passenger coach, completing the visual rhythm of the train and giving the whole formation a coherent look.
Silver Series technical details
The roof reproduces the Duck Bill or Clerestory profile typical of late 19th-century American rolling stock. The body features textured engraving simulating wood panelling, with flush transparent windows. The underframe includes separately applied truss rods that add visual depth to the model. The two-axle trucks replicate the wrought-iron design of the era, moulded in self-lubricating Celcon plastic. Wheels are blackened metal with RP25 profile and non-magnetic axles, ensuring smooth running through turnouts and points. E-Z Mate Mark II couplers are mounted directly on the car body.
Fitting into a period passenger consist
Within an American passenger consist from the second half of the 19th century, this Combine works as a transition piece between freight and passenger rolling stock. The unlettered green finish makes it easy to integrate with other cars from the same series or with equipment from different roads, leaving the door open for custom lettering later on. At the station, the visual contrast between the blind baggage end and the windowed passenger end adds variety to the train without breaking the unity of the formation.
