The Trix 22546 reproduces the FS Reihe 460 037 steam locomotive in HO scale, a freight machine of the Italian State Railways whose history goes back to 1913, when it was originally built as a G 81 for the KPEV. With a die-cast metal chassis and body, this model was produced in a single run in 2002 and has been out of production for years, making it a catalogue piece that is genuinely hard to find on the secondary market.
Motor, traction and construction details
The model features a high-performance bell-anchor motor with a flywheel integrated into the boiler, delivering smooth and controlled running especially at low speeds. The four driven axles work through coupling rods, and the four traction tyres improve grip on gradients or demanding sections of the layout. The locomotive and tender are joined by a short coupling with specific kinematics, allowing curves to be negotiated naturally without losing the visual read of a compact unit. The system is analogue with a ready-fitted digital interface, and the couplers follow the NEM standard. The model is also prepared for a Seuthe smoke generator, though this is not included.
A Reihe 460 on an Era III layout
The D h2 wheel arrangement of the Reihe 460 defines a machine with a robust profile and solid presence on the track. In an Era III freight consist, this locomotive fits naturally at the head of covered wagons or flat cars, bringing historical coherence to the whole without forcing the scene. The 210 mm overall length gives it enough visual weight for the train to feel substantial from the very first wagon.
For a layout or a display cabinet
As a 2002 edition that is no longer in production, the Trix 22546 also has value as a collector's piece. In a display cabinet, the metal chassis and locomotive-tender combination offer a compact and well-proportioned presence. On an active layout, the ready-fitted digital interface leaves the door open for future digitalisation without any structural modifications.
