The Roco 76136 brings together two high-sided GTOW open wagons from NS in HO scale, both factory-loaded with genuine crushed and sieved mineral coal. This is no injection-moulded simulation: the load has the irregular black sheen, natural reflections and rough texture of real mineral, mounted on a removable base. It is a detail that immediately changes how the wagon reads on a layout.
Two wagons, two numbers, one coherent consist
Roco gave each wagon a different NS running number, allowing both to be coupled in the same train without visual duplication. For anyone building long Era III freight consists, this is no small thing: in a row of ten or twelve wagons, repeated numbers break the realism of the whole. With the 76136, both wagons sit in the same train with their own identities.
Confirmed technical data
Each wagon measures approximately 103 mm over buffers; the complete coupled set reaches 206 mm. They feature short KK-Kinematik couplers with standardised NEM 362 pockets, which keep the buffers close on straight track and open the gap automatically on curves. The system is 2-rail DC; the manufacturer specifies that conversion to alternating current is possible by replacing the wheelsets with the Roco 40196 axle set.
On the layout, inside a freight consist
Their compact dimensions make it easy to form long trains without filling up the sidings. In an Era III scene with a freight platform or industrial area, the real coal load adds a texture that contrasts with the rest of the rolling stock and gives the whole consist visual depth. They work well as intermediate wagons in a bulk freight consist, where repeating the same wagon type reinforces the block train feel.
