Freight traffic on Italian secondary lines in the fifties and sixties had a logic of its own: short two-axle wagons, mixed loads and consists that combined tank wagons, covered vans and agricultural stock in no particular order. The Roco 6600229 set captures exactly that rhythm, bringing together three completely different wagon types under FS livery in Epoch III.
Three wagons, three distinct roles
The standard two-axle tank wagon (192184) represents the transport of light fuels or industrial oils, with a cylindrical tank in technical grey and rivet detail. The wine tank wagon type Mv (505225) is recognisable by its exterior raised wooden slat structure, a real-world solution that acted as thermal insulation to protect the contents during Mediterranean summers. The covered wagon type FF (902825) reproduces the classic Italian carro a tetto spiovente: an angular pitched roof, central sliding doors and pierced ventilation grilles at the upper corners. None of the three shares a mould or a function, giving the set a visual variety that looks entirely natural on the layout.
Mechanics and system
All three wagons are fitted with NEM 362 couplings and the elastic dynamic KK-Kinematik mechanism, which allows realistic buffer-to-buffer coupling on both straight track and curves. The insulated metal wheels are optimised for two-rail DC. For those working with three-rail AC systems, the manufacturer provides for direct wheel replacement using Roco 40196 or Fleischmann 6560 wheelsets. The total coupled length of the set is 328 mm measured buffer to buffer.
Layout integration and consist building
On a branch line scene, these three wagons work well both in a short consist headed by a small locomotive and at the rear of a longer train where they add silhouette variety. The difference in height and profile between the wine tank, the standard tank and the covered FF wagon breaks visual monotony without losing period or operator coherence. Roco suggests the FS diesel locomotives series L.D.61 FVS as reference traction for this set, available in analogue (Roco 7300084) and digital with sound (Roco 7310084), though the set can be integrated into any FS Epoch III freight consist.
