The Roco 6200040 brings together in a single set the three elements that defined everyday traffic on German rural lines during the 1950s and 60s: a mixed 2nd/3rd class coach (BCi), a 3rd class coach with open platforms (Ci), and a covered freight wagon (G) with its characteristic brakeman's cab. Three pieces, one consist, and an instantly recognisable picture of what the DB Nebenbahnzug looked like in Epoch III.
A consist that tells a story on its own
What makes this set interesting is not just its scale or operator, but the railway logic it represents. On the secondary lines of postwar Germany, traffic was too light to separate passengers from freight: the G wagon was coupled to the rear of the train, and on the same journey travelled the locals, the post and the village supplies. The freight wagon features two fully operational sliding doors on each side, allowing you to simulate loading operations at the station dock, while the brakeman's cab adds that period detail that gives the whole consist real character. Both passenger coaches come with fitted interiors, and the bodyshells are ready to accept optional LED lighting.
Confirmed technical data
The set runs on direct current (DC Analogue) and is fitted with NEM 362 couplers with short kinematic (KKK), which keep the wagons close together on straight track and automatically separate on curves to prevent derailments. Total length of the consist is 378 mm over buffers, with a minimum passing radius of 358 mm. For Märklin three-rail layouts, the original axles can be replaced with AC-compatible ones using the Roco art. 6560 kit.
On the layout: small footprint, clear purpose
At 378 mm total length, this set takes up little space on the layout but delivers an instantly recognisable railway scene. Placed at a village platform, with a small station in the background and a DB steam locomotive at the head the consist is designed to pair with the Roco class 89.70 it captures that feeling of a local train pulling in, unloading and moving on. On a German Epoch III branch line layout, it would be hard to find a set that takes up less space and adds more coherence to the scene.
