Description

The Bachmann 14904 is a 50-foot outside braced boxcar decorated in the official CSX Transportation livery. Part of the Silver Series, it stands out for a feature rarely found on freight rolling stock: a factory-fitted FRED device with a flashing red LED powered by rail contact, no batteries needed. Placed at the rear of a long freight train, it adds a subtle but convincing touch of animation that feels right at home in a modern North American layout.

The FRED: a detail that changes how the train reads

In the late 1980s, North American railroads began replacing cabooses with electronic devices mounted on the last car. The FRED Flashing Rear End Device served that purpose: marking the end of the train and monitoring rear brake pressure. This model recreates that moment with a miniature LED circuit integrated into the rear truck, visible from the outside and operational the instant the car rolls over the track, whether on DC analogue or DCC digital systems.

Construction and running

The chassis includes an internal weight calculated to NMRA standards for 50-foot cars, improving stability through curves and reducing derailment risk when the car runs at the end of a long consist. The trucks are moulded in Celcon plastic with non-magnetic brass axles and machined metal RP25 wheels, compatible with code 83 and code 100 turnouts. The side door slides and is fully functional, and the E-Z Mate Mark II couplers allow seamless integration into any North American HO consist without modification.

In a consist and on the layout

Positioned at the tail of a freight train, this car offers something few freight wagons can: a real animated focal point at the rear. On a continuous-run layout, the LED flash is clearly visible from the trackside and reinforces the sense of a train in motion. The CSX blue livery and pad-printed reporting marks and load data blend naturally into modern-era North American consists, with no extra details needed to complete the effect.
