The 50-foot outside braced box car was one of the most widespread freight car types on North American railroads during the seventies and eighties. Bachmann reproduces it in HO scale within its Silver Series® line in Burlington Northern Cascade green, road number #214482, and adds a detail that sets it apart in any consist: a fully operational FRED device.
The FRED that closes the train
The Flashing Rear End Device FRED is the centrepiece of this model. Mounted at the rear of the car, it features a flashing red LED powered directly from the rails through the rear metal wheels, with no batteries needed. The integrated circuit works on both conventional analogue layouts and digital DCC systems, making it compatible with most setups. At the front, the E-Z Mate® Mark II coupler connects the car to the rest of the consist; at the rear, a fixed decorative coupler preserves the end-of-train look without breaking the visual flow of the whole.
Construction and finish
The wheels are machined metal with RP25 profile conforming to NMRA standards, mounted on self-lubricating Celcon plastic trucks. The car is internally weighted to NMRA standards for a low centre of gravity and smooth running. The sliding side doors are operational and can be opened by hand. The underframe reproduces the air brake system at scale, with visible sill beams and brake reservoir. Pad-printed lettering includes BN markings, weight data and road number #214482, all legible in fine detail.
At the rear of the consist, on the layout
Placing this car at the end of an HO freight consist has an immediate effect: the flashing LED brings a sense of movement to the train even when the locomotive is stationary. In a freight yard scene or on an open stretch of track, the red flash at the back of the train adds a visual anchor that makes the whole composition feel more alive. Burlington Northern Cascade green pairs well with freight rolling stock from the seventies and eighties, and the printed road number adds coherence to a period North American consist.
