The 2-8-0 wheel arrangement, known as the Consolidation, was one of the most widely used steam freight configurations in North American railway history. Athearn reproduces it here in HO scale under the Denver & Rio Grande Western livery, cab number #944, with an Old Time-style finish. The model arrives fully assembled and ready to run, with a factory-installed SoundTraxx Econami decoder and compatibility with both analogue DC and DCC digital systems.
Sound, lighting and period detail
The SoundTraxx Econami system reproduces bell, steam whistle and synchronised cylinder chuff, adding a sound layer that reinforces the atmosphere of any railway scene. The bi-directional LED headlights maintain constant intensity regardless of speed, and the Old Time-style details classic steam stack, boiler-mounted bell, clear cab windows and separately applied wire piping give the model a visual character true to the early era of North American railroading.
Mechanism and running gear
The die-cast metal chassis adds real weight on the track, improving adhesion on grades and through curves. The 5-pole motor with flywheels delivers drive to all powered axles, and precision slow-speed control allows smooth, unhurried switching moves. The blackened metal wheels with RP25 profile are compatible with the major track brands on the market, and the McHenry® operating knuckle couplers make consist building straightforward.
On the layout and in a consist
In a freight scene or on a period-themed layout, the D&RGW #944 works well at the head of a freight wagon consist. Its steam silhouette tall stack and bell visible above the boiler gives it real presence on the track without needing anything added. For modellers working with moderate-radius layouts, the 18-inch minimum radius with 22 inches as the recommended value allows it to fit into designs that do not always have room for wide curves. The programmable Lashup MU function also opens up the possibility of running in multiple unit with other compatible locomotives.
