Conrail corporate blue is one of the most recognisable liveries in North American railroading from the second half of the twentieth century, and the EMD SD38 is one of the locomotives that carried it with the most visual consistency throughout its years of service. The integrated SoundTraxx Econami decoder reproduces the sound of the EMD 16-645E prime mover in its atmospheric version no turbocharger with that distinctive low-RPM rhythm that sets this variant apart from the rest of the 645 family. The system operates on both DC and DCC, with NMRA-compatible functions, slow-speed control and programmable lighting effects on F5 and F6. The programmable MU lashup function allows it to be integrated into multiple-unit consists with other compatible locomotives, a common practice in North American prototype operations of the era.
Mechanics and track geometry
The die-cast metal chassis adds real weight to the model, translating into stable traction and smooth starts even at reduced speeds. Six powered axles with helical gears and a five-pole motor with precision flywheels complete a drivetrain designed for fluid running. RP25 wheels and scale McHenry couplers ensure compatibility with rolling stock from other manufacturers. Minimum operating radius is 18 inches, with 22 inches recommended for more comfortable running.
