The Trix 23320 is the HO scale reproduction of the Deutsche Bundesbahn Abteilwagen C4i, a lightweight 3rd class compartment coach from Era III. With road number 73 338 and a length of 255 mm over buffers, the model sits naturally within a post-war passenger consist, where this type of lightweight rolling stock ran alongside steam or diesel traction on regional and suburban services.
Details that make the difference at platform level
Trix has paid close attention to the elements that make the C4i recognisable: the handrails on the access doors are fitted separately, giving them genuine relief and volume, and the end steps are equally rendered as individual parts. These are the small details that, seen from platform level on a layout, turn a wagon into a real coach. The tail lights use integrated maintenance-free LEDs, adding presence to the rear of the train when the consist is standing at the station.
Technical integration in the consist
The coupler follows the NEM standard and incorporates the close coupling mechanism, reducing the gap between coaches and giving the train visual continuity on both straight and curved track. At 255 mm in length, the coach has a visual weight that sits comfortably alongside other Era III HO scale rolling stock. The system is analogue DC, with no decoder required.
How it fits into an Era III layout
In a DB passenger consist from the 1950s or 1960s, the 3rd class C4i brings historical coherence to the whole train. Placed as an intermediate or tail coach, it adds length and rhythm without resorting to more modern stock. At the station, with the tail lights on, the scene gains a quiet but effective railway atmosphere.
