The X-2800 series was one of the most distinctive diesel railcars in the SNCF fleet during Epoch III, and REE Modèles has built this model with a level of detail that goes well beyond the usual standard in HO scale. The X-2828, assigned to Lyon-Vaise depot and finished in the iconic red 605 and cream 407 combination, comes in DCC sound version with specific MGO engine recordings that give the model a recognisable and authentic sound character.
An interior that shows from the platform
One of the most striking aspects of this model is that the work doesn't stop at the bodyshell. The interior includes the passenger saloon, both cabs and a replica of the engine room complete with the MGO motor. The directional white LED lighting and interior illumination mean that, in a station scene or on a layout with good ambient light, the overall effect is completely different from an undetailed interior. At 319 mm long, the X-2828 fills just the right amount of space to make a platform look busy without overwhelming the scene.
Construction and accuracy of form
REE Modèles used 3D scanning of a preserved unit to fine-tune the model's proportions, complemented by photo-etched metal details and over 300 individual components. The motor is high quality, with smooth and quiet running that makes it easy to operate on layouts with curves from a minimum radius of 420 mm, compatible with references such as Fleischmann R2 or Roco R3.
Fit on the layout and in a consist
A railcar like the X-2828 works well on its own or as the lead unit of a short Epoch III passenger consist. In a secondary station or regional line scene, it brings movement and visual scale without needing additional hauled stock. Paired with trailers from the same series, the consist gains length and the coherence of a complete train. The red and cream livery also adds a recognisable splash of colour to a layout dominated by more neutral rolling stock.
