Hobbytrain's H24852 set brings together two two-axle tank wagons with Paul Millet registration and SNCF livery, representing Epoch III. This is a Neukonstruktion released in 2022, based on the Leichtbau-Kesselwagen type built by Waggonfabrik Uerdingen from 1941 onwards, of which more than 3,700 units were produced. Each wagon features etched metal parts and NEM coupling, with constructive variants that include differences in the presence of a bremserhaus.
Two tank wagons with history in N scale
The Leichtbau-Kesselwagen Uerdingen was one of the most widespread two-axle tank wagon types in mid-twentieth-century Europe. With a capacity of 30 m³ per unit, these tanks ran in freight consists of very different kinds. Hobbytrain has worked the constructive variants into the model, so the two units in the set are not identical copies: the presence or absence of a bremserhaus introduces a subtle but recognisable difference that adds natural variety to the pair.
Details and confirmed finish
The model features etched metal parts, NEM pocket coupling and is designed to run on two-rail analogue DC systems. The different service numbers on the two units reinforce the feel of real rolling stock, avoiding the uniformity that can sometimes let down sets of repeated wagons.
A place in an N scale freight consist
On an N scale layout, two tank wagons of this type can slot into a varied freight consist without taking up much space. Placed in the middle or at the rear of a goods train, they add visual continuity and evoke the kind of industrial traffic that defined European freight lines during Epoch III. They also work well as a starting point for building a longer tank consist by adding compatible additional units.
