The Bachmann 17618 is a 40-foot Quad Hopper wagon for CSX Transportation, part of the manufacturer's Silver Series range. It carries the solid black livery with high-visibility white lettering and road number #141948 a distinct colour variant within the same family of models based on the original 1986 Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O) hoppers, a fleet that was absorbed and repainted following the consolidation that gave rise to CSX.
A wagon built for unit coal trains
The four-bay hopper is the definitive wagon type in the long unit coal and aggregate trains that define North American railroading. This model captures that concept with an injection-moulded plastic body featuring moulded rivets and vertical structural reinforcements. The textured coal load insert is removable, allowing you to switch between a loaded consist and an empty return run, leaving the interior visible with its sloped panels leading down to the four bottom discharge doors.
Mechanics designed for continuous running
Bachmann has fitted this wagon with darkened machined metal wheels to the standard RP25 profile, compatible with code 70, 83 and 100 track. The non-magnetic blackened brass axles are mounted on self-lubricating Celcon plastic trucks, and the wagon includes an internal metal weight for improved stability through curves and turnouts. Couplers are E-Z Mate Mark II magnetic, mounted directly to the body.
Its role in the consist
On an HO scale North American layout, this type of wagon really comes into its own when grouped in long strings. Combined with other units from the same family, the train takes on that sense of repetitive industrial convoy that visually defines CSX coal trains. The black livery contrasts well with grey and corporate yellow variants, and road number #141948 adds a touch of individuality within the overall consist.
