The Corail VTU coaches are an instantly recognisable part of the SNCF passenger fleet from the nineties and early two-thousands. Azar Models reproduces them in Z scale with the 'Nouvelle décoration' livery, identifiable by the Casquette logo, in a set that pairs a first-class coach red doors with a second-class coach green doors both finished with fine paint over plastic injection moulding.
Two classes, one coherent consist
The set includes both class variants that typically ran together in SNCF passenger trains during Epoch V. Having both coaches in a single set makes it easy to build a balanced consist from the start: the chromatic contrast between red and green doors adds variety without breaking the visual unity of the train. At 121.5 mm per coach measured without couplers the pair takes up a compact footprint while still making a real impression on the layout.
Confirmed technical details
The wheels are burnished metal, a detail that improves both visual appearance and electrical conductivity on the track. The interior is represented, adding depth when viewing the train from the side of the layout or in a display case. The short Märklin-type couplers reduce the gap between coaches for a tighter, more realistic reading of the consist. Minimum operating radius is 195 mm.
Integration into a Z scale layout
On a Z scale layout, where space is often at a premium, a set like this adds real train length without requiring large radii. Placed behind a locomotive from the same era and operator, the two coaches give the consist continuity and a natural feel. They also work well in a display case, where the colour difference between classes makes the pair easy to read at a glance.
