The Athearn ATH-1385 brings together three Berwick Bathtub extended side gondola wagons lettered for JAMX, each carrying a unique road number. The original Bathtub design was conceived to maximise internal load capacity without bottom discharge doors; in this version, the sides have been raised to increase usable volume and adapt the wagon to bulky material transport. The result is a distinctive silhouette instantly recognisable in any North American freight consist.
Three wagons with their own identity within the consist
Having three different road numbers #1017, #1021 and #1022 lets you build a long sequence without any number repeating, which makes a real difference when the train passes in front of the viewer or sits in a classification yard. The high-precision pad printing reproduces the JAMX lettering with the level of detail expected from an Athearn Ready-to-Roll model, and the metal handrails, end ladders and brake wheel are individually applied rather than moulded into the body.
Geometry and rolling performance optimised for the layout
Machined metal wheels with RP25 profile ensure smooth running on standard North American commercial track, including Code 70, 83 and 100. Internal ballasting meets NMRA standards to maintain stability through curves and reduce the risk of derailment. Minimum turning radius is 18 inches, though the manufacturer recommends curves of 22 inches or more for more natural behaviour in long trains. Body-mounted McHenry articulated couplers allow magnetic coupling and uncoupling with other compatible brands.
Integration into a North American freight consist
On a North American themed layout, these three wagons bring visual continuity to the consist: the elongated silhouette and raised sides create a recognisable rhythm within a freight formation.
