Tamiya's Acrylic Mini range has been the starting point for many modellers and the working standard for many more for decades. XF-7 Flat Red is a matte red within that family: no sheen, good opacity and that characteristic Tamiya acrylic flow that neither rushes nor dulls on drying. A colour that appears in countless projects, from military vehicles to aviation models, competition cars and figures.
A matte red that performs well on the painting bench
The XF designation in the Tamiya range indicates a flat finish matte with no reflection. XF-7 covers solidly and mixes without complications. For airbrush application, Tamiya acrylic thinners X-20A, 81020, 81030, 81040, 81520 or 87077 are recommended for best results. With a brush, retarder 87114 helps smooth out brushstrokes and extend working time, which is especially useful on flat or large surfaces.
Water-based, easy clean-up before curing
Being a water-based acrylic, XF-7 allows tools and surfaces to be cleaned with water before the paint cures, which simplifies the working routine considerably. Once dry, the matte finish sets firm and stable. It is a small 10ml bottle, the standard format for the Mini line, designed to keep the colour within reach without taking up too much space on the workbench. In any working red palette, XF-7 is one that rarely goes missing.
A reference colour for scale modelling projects
Matte red appears in many modelling contexts: markings, engine details, military vehicles, aircraft, historic competition cars and figures. XF-7 is one of those references worth keeping on the painting bench not because it is the only red, but because it is the red that appears most often in Tamiya assembly instructions and in those of other brands that work with equivalents from the range.
