Some ship kits work well as a first project. Some also have a story to tell. The Keranova Pilar Escampavia 1865 belongs to that second category: a light Spanish coastal patrol vessel from the nineteenth century, reproduced in 1/40 scale with traditional building materials and an accessibility level designed for those approaching naval modelling for the first time without wanting to sacrifice a result with real presence.
Traditional construction with laser-cut frame
The kit starts from high-density plywood sheets with the false keel and frames laser-cut at the factory. That detail makes a real difference in the early stages of the build: the parts fit together with direct symmetry, alignment is straightforward, and the time that would otherwise go into manual adjustments can be spent on the finish instead. Over that frame, the double planking system is applied to the hull using strips of sapele, American walnut and lime three woods with different grain and behaviour that bring texture, strength and a clean, even exterior finish.
Kit contents and included documentation
The set includes a blister pack with cast metal fittings cannon, anchors, blocks, bitts and belaying pins cotton thread bobbins for recreating the cordage, and textured nineteenth-century historical flags. The documentation is one of the kit's strongest points: an illustrated instruction manual in Spanish with step-by-step photographs of the actual build process, and a 1:1 scale plan of the finished model's side view, useful for checking the placement of the rigging and structural details. The packaging is compact 42 x 16 x 5 cm, approximately 1.50 kg and the kit is supplied unassembled. Tools, glues and paints are sold separately.
